Refugee Employment - Policy
In March 2005 the Department for Work & Pensions published a refugee employment strategy, Working to Rebuild Lives (pdf).
This sets out for the first time the Government’s position on refugees and the UK labour market and its aims to:
- attract more refugees into Jobcentre Plus
- provide practical employment & language support
- build partnerships with the voluntary sector
- strengthen the evidence base to measure progress
The Home Office has published its strategy on refugee integration, Integration Matters (pdf). This explains how the Government will take steps to ensure that refugees:
- achieve their full potential
- contribute to the community
- secure access to the services to which they are entitled
Proposals in the strategy include measures to:
- introduce SUNRISE caseworkers in 4 pilot areas (London, Manchester, Glasgow and Leeds)
- offer refugees loans to help with integration
- expand the provision of mentors through the Time Together programme
Jobcentre Plus has also set out its framework for partnership working to help refugees fulfil their potential Working Together to Help Rebuild Lives (pdf)
As an independent organisation, Employability Forum will monitor the implementation of the strategies and publish interim reports.
