Refugee Employment - Health Professionals

Doctors

The Refugee Council and the BMA have established a database of refugee doctors so that refugees with valuable skills and experience can be better advised on how to register and practice as a doctor in the UK.

For further information about the database and for links to other organizations working with refugee doctors can be found here.

A strategy for the employment of refugee nurses Silver Lining (pdf) was published by the Employability Forum in July 2004 with the support of the Department of Health.

An exhibition stand outlining the challenges facing refugee nurses is available from the Royal College of Nurses.

In July 2005, Praxis and Employability Forum held a follow up conference to Silver Lining called 'Silver Lining 2'. This brought together over 60 practitioners, workforce planners and policy makers to review progress since the launch of the refugee nurses strategy in July 2004. It gave an opportunity to share and celebrate good practice and develop an action plan to take forward the work. A copy of the conference report can be downloaded here.

In April 2006, the Guide for Refugee Nurses and Midwives was published by the Employability Forum. You can download a copy here, or request a hard copy by email
