Refugee Employment - Advice & Guidance
Refugees have been dispersed throughout the UK and there are still very substantial refugee communities in London and the South East.
In every major city with refugee communities there are a range of organisations that can provide practical advice, guidance and support:
- Jobcentre Plus provides advice and support on job-seeking and on claiming benefits. Personal Advisers in Jobcentres have up-to-date information on the New Deal, on Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) and details of relevant training programmes including ESOL.
- We are working closely with Jobcentre Plus offices in areas of the country with significant refugee communities - across London, in the West Midlands, in the North East, North West as well as in Wales & Scotland.
- Voluntary organisations play a key role in the delivery of the refugee employment strategy and we try to keep in touch with many different projects in different parts of the country.
- Refugee professionals such as teachers, nurses or doctors can secure expert advice and guidance and, in some cases, financial support from a wide range of voluntary organisations in different parts of the country.
- Refugee Community Organisations (RCOs) are often the first point of contact for new arrivals since they are have the greatest understanding of the situation in the country of origin, and have staff and volunteers who speak the relevant languages.
- Employers and Professional Bodies are becoming increasingly involved in the movement to integrate refugees and migrant workers and are aware of the need to find new ways of evaluating overseas skills and experience.
