Opening Doors for Refugees Working in Education

Rebuilding Lives - Groundwork: Progress report on refugee employment

June 2006

The National Refugee Integration Forum Subgroup on Employment and Training (chaired by Patrick Wintour of the Employability Forum) has produced a progress report on refugee employment in the UK. It sets out issues around data collection, progress made since the publication of the DWP strategy in 2005 and what more needs to be done. You can view a pdf of the document here. Refugee employment in Birmingham

April 2006

In early 2006, Trellis (an Employability Forum project in Birmingham) commissioned research on the experiences of refugees seeking employment in Birmingham. Issues covered included how individuals engage with Jobcentre Plus as well as the organisation of Jobcentre Plus in Birmingham, including the recruitment of Refugee Advisors. A pdf version of the report is available here.

Working to Rebuild Lives - one year on

June 2006

Held a year after publication of the Government's policy on refugee employment and integration, this event explored the impact of the policy and next steps to improve access to sustainable employment for refugees. Information from the event was incorporated into the progress report on refugee employment in the UK (above).

A Guide for Refugee Nurses and Midwives

April 2006

This guide was written by Roswyn Hakesley-Brown, Chair of the Refugee Nurses Task Force and past President of the Royal College of Nursing. It is written for refugee nurses and midwives who want to get back into their profession in the UK. It is also a vital resource for anybody working with refugee nurses and midwives.
